In 2018, just a year after Hurricane María, around 187 schools were forcibly closed by the non-democratically appointed Secretary of Education, Julia Keleher, who was later arrested for corruption. Alongside austerity measures from the unelected U.S. Oversight Fiscal Board, 673 public schools have shut since 2007, representing 44% of the total number of schools.

Denying education to an oppressed people is a direct attack on their ability to resist and reclaim power.
