In Puerto Rico, messages like “No se vende” (“Not for sale”) are spray-painted on homes as acts of resistance against disaster capitalism and the forced displacement of local communities. After hurricanes and economic crises, outside investors exploit the chaos, buying up land and pushing out native residents. In the image, a dried-up Christmas tree lies in front of a fading but still-standing home, with a thriving palm tree behind it—symbols in contrast. The Christmas tree, a symbol of cultural import, withers while the native palm flourishes in the back, creating a striking contrast that speaks to endurance and rooted identity in the face of colonial subjugation. It becomes a visual protest against cultural erasure and assimilation.
