Juxtaposing youth and old age, the painting depicts a youth on a longboard playing a kazoo, while walking a dog who pulls towards an older gentleman strolling the sidewalk of an imagined suburban-urban landscape!
Michael Abraham says - "I've always been aware of time ticking away. In 2010 when this was painted I was in my role as a painter, father and friend. I was in the moment - capturing a moment. My studio was downtown Vancouver and home was in the burbs. I would see my sons, in the prime of their youth, glide around on longboards oblivious to time and aging, while at the same i'd see my older neighbourhood friend Ben deal with slowing down. Ben looked like a storybook Bruegel-esque character, with his hair was as white as my West Highland Terrier "Jack". I wanted to capture this passage in time - the before work-life and after work-life periods - this spoke to me about the passage of time.
The kazoo was one of those items that reminds me of being a kid. I had one in my studio props box for the longest time, and it always prompted itself to be in a painting. " M.A. - notes on painting
