The scale and rotating functionality of this sculpture resemble a traditional tabletop globe. The globe’s sphere consists of different facial features representing different cultures and ages.
With six noses sharing only six eyes, perceptually we still see six full faces. The arc support is formed as an arm with two hands. The lower hand gestures in ponder as it supports beneath the head(s) chin. And the top hand pivots the globe, seemingly finger scratching the head(s) in bemusement. On the convex base there are bas-relief natural aquatic elements, and a starfish sits atop the head.
The axis rod is crowned with three birds that appear to circle the heavens when the globe is rotated in a clockwise fashion. It is topped with a double-faced radiant sun. The sky elements suggest that the figures are looking out into the vastness of space.
There is a hidden pin securing the inner bearing to the rod and globe which may click and gently squeak when spun.
When turned slowly the faces of this globe-like ‘ball of wonder’ are looking outward and capture people in expressions of awe. But when spun fast they portray an overwhelmed dizziness that we all may feel at times.
