"Northwest Atlanta Globe is a public art sculpture based on community maps. This project highlights locations from the past two centuries in Atlanta, with the heightened detailing of locations that have significance to the Northwest Atlanta community prominently marked on the surface of the orb. Railroads tracks continue onto the surface of the plaza, where they are embedded in the concrete. These shiny metal rail lines, embedded flush with the surface of the plaza, usher visitors to the front doors of the library, visually connecting the globe with the building itself.
The artist engaged the community through numerous mapmaking workshops and outreach activities. Community members of all ages were invited to make hand-drawn maps, depicting details of places of interest in Northwest Atlanta. These map drawings showed locations and names of places from the past and the present. The artist carefully numbered each drawing and tried to embed interesting details from each of the maps in the three-dimensional relief surface of the sculpture. "
