Part of a series of little table-top paintings painted during the interminable storms which plagued Aberdeenshire during Autumn 2023 and confined me to the studio day after day.
On Instagram I came across the work of a young English painter, Florence Hutchings. Her work manages to be both child-like and sophisticated at the same time and I envied the freedom she gave herself, particularly in her drawings of everyday objects.
Usually it is the appeal of the flowers which motivates these small table top compositions, but this time it was the wonky perspective of the table and the simplified drawing of the vase which got me going. For once the muted colour and tones of the flowers are playing second fiddle.
