This painting depicts the large unnamed lake in the Upper Basin, and the flanks of Split Mountain, one of the Sierra's "14ers". I have tried to get up this mountain three times, turned away first by a storm, then ferocious wind, and the third time, simple fatigue. Perhaps that is why the summit is far off the canvas' frame, unapproachable --for now.
