Women so easily become invisible to themselves and others as we age. In my experience, mothers often feel this way. Our time is co-opted by taking care of others, at work and at home. This image depicts a moment of solitude and celebration of me, not as wife or mother, but me. Below is an excerpt from my blog, outlining the personal experience that prompted this painting.
“This “selfie” was taken a few summers ago at Lake Monroe, on a dazzling warm sunny day. We had just had a picnic; my husband was playing in the water with the kids, and I was sunning o the sand with a book. While taking photos of my family, I turned the camera on myself and was so taken with the sun pouring through the holes in my straw hat and the little spots of light that were splayed over my face and body. With my over-size sunglasses on, in that moment I felt truly glamorous. It can be tough for a mom to reconnect with that part of herself, that goddess that never left but is just continually distracted and focused on her responsibilities. This image represents my happy place, a rare, delicious moment of contentment, complete with warm, sandy toes.”
