This series draws on the ancient Celtic Ogham alphabet, in which each letter is a tree. Each painting carries the spirit of its tree into contemporary form through abstraction, collage, and North American roots.
Nion — the Ash — began with a drawing of the green ash tree. Natural greens, peach, and deep purplish browns weave through a profusion of waving branches. The word STRENGTH is written into the composition, and a dark bird moves through the tangle — the Ash is the tree of connection between worlds, the axis mundi, roots below and crown above.
