One of my most enduring art themes since art college - and I graduated some half a century ago - has been an abstract interpretation of flight. My latest work in acrylic on paper and measuring 76 x 56 cms (30 x 22 inches) is based not on anything mechanical, but of a large flock of birds…startled into levitation with wings flapping wildly as they scatter in all directions. Painted with hundreds of overlapping brushstrokes, dragged semi-dry using a decorator’s 40 cm (1.5 inch) brush over a period of several days, I knew when to stop. Sometimes I go too far with artworks, but with this piece it just felt right as it is.
