Emerging from, or sinking into, the depths of the deep, this new dark ‘Vauban’ inspired collage uses, as with recent artworks of a similar size (75 x 56 cms), cut-up sheets of handwritten pages from mid-19th century ’quittance’ documents - basically legal property transaction drawn up by notaires - and pages from a girl’s school exercise book written in the early 1900s. These pieces were individually coloured after measuring and cutting before being applied to a background sheet of Arches Platine cold-pressed paper coloured overall with Talens & Son ‘Rembrandt’ pastel crayons. More or less two solid days of crayoning, drawing measuring, cutting and sticking went into completing this piece.
