Another 'Vauban' inspired artwork of a similar size (75 x 56 cms) to others in this on-paper series... here I used old Michelin road maps of France, and cut-up sheets of handwritten pages from mid-19th century ’quittance’ documents - basically legal property transactions drawn up by avocats - stuck to a sheet of archival 'Arches Platine' cold-pressed paper with Conté crayon background drawing. This is my interpretation of his planning... using maps and hand-written notes for the collage.
Maréchal Vauban, or Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), is considered one the of the greatest military engineers of all time. In his life he was responsible for the fortification of over 160 places in France; however his major contribution to warfare was his methods of attack, which revolutionised siege warfare.
