John Coltrane was a jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. Listening to his music is one the first experiences which bent me on an artistic path. His deeply moody and sensual notes opened my mind to areas of feeling I hadn’t realized were available. I felt pulled to the poetic in a way I did not understand but clearly felt. His music broke apart the syntax of my understanding of the world and in doing so he rearranged my brain. According to Coltrane, “I start in the middle of a sentence and move both directions at once.”
