Audre Lorde was a writer, professor, philosopher, intersectional feminist, poet and civil rights activist. Throughout her life, Lorde refused to be invisible. She did not shrink herself to fit into others' expectations. She wrote, spoke, and lived authentically—paving the way for future generations of activists and artists to do the same. She believed poetry and intellectual work should be accessible to everyone—not just academics. Lorde was both a radical activist and a mother—roles society often treated as incompatible. She redefined motherhood on her own terms, balancing caregiving with public activism, proving that women can have complex, multifaceted identities. She also refused to hide her sexuality. She embraced her identity publicly and used her work to speak about intersectionality—how race, gender, class, and sexuality overlap in systems of oppression.
