Aretha Franklin was a singer, songwriter and pianist. During the 1960s and 1970s, the music industry was heavily male-dominated, especially in soul, gospel, and rock & roll. Aretha became the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She Advocated for Civil Rights using her platform to fight for racial justice defying the stereotype that entertainers should stay apolitical. She redefined “respect”. Her 1967 version of the Otis Redding song became a feminist anthem, demanding respect for women and Black Americans—empowering both movements.
