Ida B. Wells was an investigative journalist, educator, and early leader in the civil rights movement. She was one of the founders of the NAACP. Wells was dedicated to combating prejudice and violence, and advocating for African-American equality—especially that of women. Wells faced widespread disapproval for her views and activism, perhaps most unfortunately from within both the civil rights movement and the women’s suffrage movements which preferred to work for singularly focused progress rather than address intersectional oppression.
