Helen Keller was an author, disability rights advocate, political activist and lecturer. Losing her hearing and sight at 19 months she lived largely without language until she met her first teacher at age seven. She went on to write 14 books, hundreds of speeches, and countless correspondences, often advocating for those with disabilities, women’s suffrage, labor rights, and peace. Recently her existence and accomplishments have been questioned by a confused public, distracted by ableist misinformation, unable to fathom the capabilities of deaf blind individuals.
