Coretta Scott King was an author, activist, and civil rights leader. Probably most famous for being the wife of Martin Luther King Jr., she almost didn’t marry Martin. Early in their relationship, Coretta was hesitant about marriage because she feared the toll that the life of activism would take on her. She also wanted to maintain her own career and identity. She was an accomplished musician, had a master's degree in education, and was one of the first Black women to speak at the United Nations. Coretta was an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, and in her later years, she spoke out in support of LGBTQ+ rights. She was particularly vocal during the 1990s, advocating for marriage equality and protections against discrimination.
