For this shot, I took multiple exposures to find a "sweet spot" that would expose long enough to show the earth shine (an effect caused by the sun's light reflecting from the earth onto the "dark side" of the moon) but short enough to avoid blowing out the illuminated portion of the moon. Here you can clearly see the crescent moon along with the details of the darker earthshine-illuminated portion.
