This work is a reference to the monument erected by Colonel Despard to the 58th Regiment and those who died in the Northern Wars. It once overlooked the Derwent River, Hobart. I was astounded to read no reference to Māori, that is the enemy whom the 58th regiment fought, they are completely anonymous. This is my response to the silence apportioned ngā toa. I refer to the native kurī throughout Ātāroa and in the larger wooden assemblage Reimagining the New Zealand Land Wars I play with the scale of the New Zealand native kurī and the English bulldog.
