The sequence of colors, or a spectrum print, is part of the edition and is made to demonstrate the layers of ink colors used in the order printed. We often exhibited a spectrum print along with a finished print and woodblock to help the viewer visualize the print process. This is the last reduction woodcut in the edition available for sale of this iconic Portsmouth print in the artist's possession.
"Early Morning on the Piscataqua" is a view of a salt freighter going up the Piscataqua River with the aid of the Moran tugs. The city of Portsmouth is in the background. The Memorial Bridge is open. The view is from the Kittery shore in front of the Sarah Mildred Long bridge.
