Growing up in a fishing and farming village in Senegal, I noticed that a walking pace is part of everyday life though it may not be the same for everyone elsewhere. There is that urge of starting to work, that urge of arriving on time without relying on a wristwatch but using the sun. Even for a special event, the fast pace does not change when anywhere one is going is in walking distance – walking fast is part of daily life.
The person walking does not have time to see how long each step is . . . what they want is to arrive.
I still see differences between the walking pace in people who rely on the sun as they do daily in the countryside and people who live in a big industrial town traveling by public transportation to go to work.
