One of the challenges my art quilt group did in 2013 was to take one of our old quilts and transform it into a modern contemporary version. There were no strict rules, you could change the colors and size but the two should relate somehow because both would be hung together in the exhibition. Rose in Bloom came out of that challenge. At the time I was traveling so I had to think on my feet as to what fabrics I should use. I had the old quilt with me as reference. I chose pinks, yellows, oranges and greens. I drew a quick sketch of an open rose and got to work cutting out pieces in different colors according to the sketch. I used raw edge machine stitching and built up the design piece by piece. I was quite pleased with the result and the show was well received.
