Title: Homage to Jan (and a Ghost from 1914)
My latest work, Jan’s Morning, was born from a conversation with my dear friend Jan, a writer in the Catskills. At 81, her dedication to the wildlife she tends—lugging corn through the winter snow—struck me as a beautiful act of "stewardship." It reminded me of the glowing, spiritual deer painted by Franz Marc, a master who died far too young in WWI.
I felt a "monastic" pull to channel his energy into this 16x20 oil painting, using thick, expressive brushwork to honor both Jan’s strength and Marc’s legacy. This piece is part of my current investigation into how we care for the world and the history we carry with us.
