Painting on canvas. Oils, acrylic paint, canvas.
Rivers are sources of sustenance for many cultures and also can form natural and perceived borders between people. The location of the mural is important to me because it faces the Willamette River and Alton Baker Park, where Oregon’s exclusion laws forced the Black community across the bridge, known as the Across the Bridge community, to live outside city limits. The stories of racism and exclusion are parallel to the experiences of my family and the Black community in Portland, Oregon where many were displaced through redlining and the 1948 flood that wiped out Vanport, Oregon.
