I make work about the complexity of identities and how we're expected to present and perform for consumption under white supremacy. So I write and make videos, installations, community experiences and theatre as Carla Rossi, Portland’s premier drag clown, who finds herself in satirical environments that lampoon our realities and ask for better ones. As a whiteface clown, Carla is the ultimate Karen. She calls herself "the Ghost of White Privilege," but she's more of a trickster like Coyote or Bluejay or Jerri Blank than a parody or impersonation of femininity. She's how I negotiate my mixed race and gender publicly, and how I hold myself and white folks—even the “woke” ones—occupying my homelands accountable. Creating unconventional and joyful experiences for queer and Indigenous communities has become my means for feeding resilience under colonization, climate crisis and white Americans with and without guns.
