Artist: Zoe Scanlon
Zoe Scanlon is a recent graduate from the University of Oregon. She graduated with a BFA with a concentration in jewelry and metalsmithing. Her practice in art ranges in the early years of her childhood starting with doodling in her notebook to architecture classes in high school to metalsmithing classes in university. Her interest in metalsmithing was sparked when taking her first enameling class in the spring of 2021. Since then, she has been creating small renditions of the past, and through enamel, seek to encapsulate the fragility of the moments and memories we tend to forget or take advantage of. She considers reflection as a treat, allowing herself to absorb the past and improve her future, learn through mistakes and think through her actions. Through the practice of enamel, she sifts layer upon layer and then removes mistakes with an abrasive and conceal imperfections she seeks to forget. The process of enamel parallels the process of memory: you can never fully remove an entire layer, and unintentional burnout will always be seen.
