Born in Tokyo, Japan, Katsuyuki Shibata grew up under the influence of his craftsman father. Photography was one of his early paths, though after moving to the United States in his 20s, Katsuyuki started to explore stained glass and printmaking in Eugene, Oregon.
After being involved in organic farming for a decade, he picked up his camera again and created slideshows for the student exchange program, which ultimately led him to pursue landscape photography.
Katsuyuki enjoys photographing places in the Pacific Northwest, where he feels a strong emotional connection. In 2011, his first major exhibit at Eugene's Jacobs Gallery was well received for his own interpretation of those landscapes, strong sense of composition and unique post-processing techniques. Over the years, Katsuyuki's focus expanded to the alpine countries in the Oregon and Washington and Cascades, where he ventures out on backpacking trips. Nothing is more rewarding to him than finding beauty and experiencing solitude in the wilderness and bringing back images that capture those special memories through the hard work of getting there.
Katsuyuki was accepted into the Seattle Ethnic Artist Roster Call in 2014 and 2017. Despite being a native Japanese, he does not overtly emphasize his Japanese roots, but the subtlety of his heritage can often be sensed in his photography. In 2021, more than a dozen of Katsuyuki's photographs were acquired by the University of Oregon for its newly renovated University Health Center. In 2022, he was one of the awardees of Artist Grant, funded by the City of Eugene Cultural Services and administered by Lane Arts Council.
