MessageStatement
Raised in Houston, TX, based in Jersey City, NJ, Courtney Minor has been creating art professionally for 6 years. “Doors Into My Life” features self portraits, tributes, and protest art made in the last 5 years right up to the present. Courtney’s life, like others, is an evolution. Courtney practices deep introspection looking to the past for answers to the future. Acutely aware of her body and feelings but unable to express them verbally, Courtney’s works are often highly emotional echoing her chaotic inner self. Often stirred by injustice seen in the world, her own physical ailments, or her love of history & education, she imbues those hallmarks into her works. Profoundly affected by discrimination levied against herself and witnessing the oppression of others deemed different has influenced her latest work revolved around themes of Otherness.
Whether in her figurative line drawings filled with paint and collage or her history education graffiti surrounding her central avatar figures, all of Courtney’s works are doorways into her life, her psyche and strong view that all should feel valued and equal in society no matter their differences. Please take time to look at all the layers in her works, the doodles, the backwards words written that way on purpose, the phrases splayed across the surfaces or the works with just gradient color conveying the emotion of the center image. All have meaning. Nothing is there for vanity.
Currently, Courtney has been creating ongoing series called New Humans: The Others. Some works from this solo exhibit feature these new works and her evolving signature style.
