Par for the Course, is a mosaic mural created by artist and Coronado native Kirstin Green.
The multi-colored mosaic is made from glass and is located just outside the main entrance to the Coronado Golf Course Clubhouse. The art work was commissioned by the City of Coronado to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the golf course, which opened December 19, 1957.
The mural was designed to highlight the beauty of the golf course and also the diversity of the people you see playing golf. The dynamic thrill from golf is when you hit the ball well and it goes the direction you want it to go and how good it feels. Green wanted the piece to be meaningful.
The way the tesserae (individual piece of glass) are set, each piece lends to the flow and message the piece is supposed to communicate. Each tesserae radiates out from the golf ball and creates that critical feeling of action as it is almost breaking through the sky.
Like the golf course itself, the mosaic incorporates a lot of the local beauty and landmarks. The Coronado Bay Bridge, trees, birds, the rolling green hills, the sparkling blue water and the mountains in the back are all included.
The man in the foreground is wearing a 1950's golf outfit. Green created a modern scene with a man in old-fashioned clothes as a nod to that era. The golf ball is ceramic and pops out like a real golf ball. It's made from a cast of a real golf ball.
