Mother Earth (1939)
Artist: Donal Hord
Medium: Tapestry
Location: Coronado Public Library, Spreckels Reading Room

This tapestry was made in 1939, funded as a federal art project through the Works Progress Administration. Donal Hord designed the full-size caricature, which was in turn woven using French Gobelin tapestry techniques by M. Kendall, V. Kelley, and F. Manchester. The woman in the tapestry represents the people of the earth, the pineapple represents the fruits of the earth, and the baby swaddled in corn husk represents the grains of the earth. Gift of Dr. & Mrs. C. H. Swartz, 1996.
