This work was inspired by a visit to Chicano Park to see the colorful art painted on the concrete structures. What I experienced was much more. The paintings tell a story of early inhabitants (Diegueno Indians), migration of Mexican and African Americans people, labor strife, prosperity, neighborhood disruption, promises, disappointment, sadness, resistance, resolve and preservation. In my conversations with residents in the park, I heard many moving versions of the stories represented on the structures. One young artist “Butterfly Man” was there with his daughter. She proudly told me about her father, how she wanted to learn to paint, to keep the beauty and legacy of the park alive.
