Three natural areas characterize the region: A relatively flat desert with many high shifting sand dunes that characterize the landscape; The Hadjar Mountains in the north of the United Arab Emirates, which are crisscrossed by wadis that are often used as traffic routes due to the low water levels; the coastal region of the Persian Gulf, with more than a hundred offshore islands and peninsulas, some of which are overgrown with mangroves. The sea is often only 25 meters deep.
