“Good Fortune” is a stained-glass mosaic artwork by Berkeley-based artist Diani Maria Rossi, commissioned in 2002. The heart shape at the center of the work features a series of 47 “magic pennies”, each with a photographic image of a child, celebrating Berkeley’s cultural diversity and conveying hope for a bright future.
When “Good Fortune” was relocated to its current location at Live Oak Community Center in 2021, the City of Berkeley’s Public Art Collection commissioned Rossi to create a companion piece, “Tails (From A Pandemic)” to be featured on the backside of the original artwork. This piece integrates techniques and motifs from the previous work, featuring a cobalt blue border at the top and pennies. The central, white oval shape is a labyrinth with one entry and one center, echoing the sentiment from a phrase featured in the mosaic and on the pennies, “e pluribus unum”, meaning “out of many, one”.
