“Passage/Painting” is by George Haynes, who is one the State’s most eminent senior visual artists. Over the last five decades, Haynes has represented Western Australia in many national exhibitions and represented Australia in exhibitions in New Zealand and Europe. This small painting captures the departure of a ship from Gage Roads, with an ex-student of Haynes, Jonathan Snowball, in the foreground, working on his own painting. The depiction of one artist painting another in the act of painting is playful, and the presence of these two artists in this moment makes this a painting of note in the context of the history of Western Australian art.
