  • Artist: George Haynes

George Haynes (b. 1938) studied at the prestigious Chelsea School of Art, London from 1958 to 1962, emigrating to Western Australia within months of completing his studies. More than five decades later, he is now considered to be one of the most accomplished and influential artists in the State. Haynes has represented Western Australia in many national exhibitions and represented Australia in exhibitions in New Zealand and Europe. Haynes is currently very active, he turns 80 this month and is currently presenting a solo exhibition at Art Collective WA in Cathedral Square.

Haynes was awarded the inaugural Mark Howlett Foundation Fellowship in 1988 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Artsource (the Artists Foundation of WA) in 2010, both being measures of peer esteem. Fellow artist Bela Kotai, whose ceramic forms are in the City’s art collection, stated at the time of the latter award that Haynes “is a person with an immense and searching intellect. An intellect located just behind the eye, and what an eye. An eye with perfect pitch, an eye that can read light like a composer following notes on a music score; parts distinct - rhythms clear - everything observed.”
