"Edge of the World" is an important work by a young and talented painter. It is a major work, beautifully executed, depicting a haunting, mysterious scene.

Inspired by images of old Etruscan and Roman wall frescoes, Tonello became intrigued by the ageing processes that caused the surfaces to fade “like a ghostly reminder” of what had come before.

Depicted in layered, crumbling surfaces.

This work use of perspective and form evokes a calmness, however illusory, which is in direct contrast to the chaos of the crumbling ruins presented.
