Many of Mandy White’s artworks are interpretations of Yamatji stories told to her by her mother. In this work, White depicts the story of the crystal caves, a magical place in the landscape where creatures play. The ghosts fly around as the animals play amongst the crystals. The animals are cheeky, with special powers that allow them to fly with the ghosts to scare people.

White has a deep love for animals and has a menagerie of animals at home. This artwork features some of those animals including two of her guinea pigs called Tucker and Flea. The use of thick acrylic paint, glitter and crystals to create the painting results in a whimsical and shimmering work that depicts a story close to the artist.

The artwork was produced while White was artist-in-residence at the Midland Junction Art Centre in 2021.
