About:

"Temporary Sculptures" is an ongoing series performed in various locations, including Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Miami.

In this performance series, Walters envelops her body with wire, creating a "cocoon" that painfully molds her physique into what society often deems the "ideal" woman's body shape, reminiscent of an iconic Coca-Cola bottle silhouette. This artistic endeavor serves as a poignant exploration of the boundaries she imposes on herself, encompassing the mental, emotional, and physical restrictions she endures to attain this 'dream body.'

As she embraces this self-imposed confinement, Walters underscores the juxtaposition between constriction and liberation. Once bound by the wire, her body, which was initially free, now faces limitations. It is within these vast and fluid environments such as deserts and beaches that she finds a newfound appreciation for the freedom of movement.

"Temporary Sculptures" delves into the ever-changing nature of the human body, accentuating the relentless cycle of yearning for past or previous physical forms rather than celebrating and cherishing the present one. This series serves as a reflection on the passage of time and how our bodies transform, encouraging viewers to contemplate the ways in which they may inadvertently restrict and confine themselves in their daily lives.

Interdisciplinary artist, Ciarra K. Walters (1992), explores the human body as both the medium and subject of her work, capturing its essence through film and photography. Her artistic practice centers around cultivating a heightened awareness of one's body, using movement, nature, and color.

Inspired by the sculptures from both nature and artists, Walters embraces spontaneity and intuition, allowing them to merge with her physical being, giving rise to her captivating performance pieces. Whether amidst rock formations, trees, blades of grass, concrete structures, or metal objects, she interplays those with the body, its emotional state, its surroundings, and its instinctual movements.

Through her performances, she establishes a profound connection with and understanding the concepts of time, mortality, and the delicate nature of human existence. Her artistic expressions exude strength and assert ownership over her physical form, building upon the conversations initiated by pioneering artists regarding the female body and its constraints on freedom of movement in the world. Walters endeavors to create a space where movement can be embraced and celebrated.
