The figure depicts “La Calavera Catrina," ("The Dapper (Lady's) Skull") introduced c. 1910 as a satirical political commentary by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada against the Mexican elite attempts to emulate European wealthy dress. Later embodied by Diego Rivera in his mural "A Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda Park" (1946) she has since become an iconic symbol of Mexican cultural pride.
