Impr. Maurice Paneels, Bruxelles. Classic movie poster size “one-sheet” for the Belgian release of Cecil B. DeMille’s 1932 epic that was based on the 1895 play by Wilson Barrett.
This film raised the ire of the Catholic Legion of Decency, who felt Hollywood was mocking the sanctity of the martyrs of the early Church, eventually resulting in strict enforcement of the Hollywood Production Code, a censorship regime that exercised absolute power over the content of every studio film in the U.S. from approximately 1933 to 1966.
