J. Olséns Litografiska, Anstalt, Sthlm. Swedish poster for the original French language film, Golgotha, released in English speaking countries as "Behold The Man," directed by Julien Duvivier. It starred Robert Le Vigan as Jesus, and was the first direct portrayal of Jesus in a sound film. While audiences in France and the United States were able to screen the film, the British Board of Film Censors banned the film, presumably objecting to an actor playing Jesus on screen. This poster highlights Mary the mother of Jesus mourning at the base of Golgotha. It is by the Swedish painter Gunnar Torhamn, and is one of the few posters in the collection that features the artist’s signature.
