The illustrated work by Jerome Nadal, SJ (1507-1580), was written at the request of Ignatius of Loyola as a meditative propaedutic for the Jesuit scholastics. In 1593, Nadal published Evangelicae Historiae Imagines, which sequenced the events in Jesus' life with 153 plates. In 1594 and 1595, it was republished as, Adnotationes et Meditationes in Evangelia, with plates engraved primarily by Anton, Hieronymus, and Johannes Wierx, and more extensive text and rearranged according to the order of the readings used in the liturgical year. The set in Blackfriars Gallery includes plates 98, 99, 130, 131, 134, 148, 149, 152, and 153, all executed by the Wierx brothers, as indicated on each image. The folios are of two different sizes and types of paper, indicating two different sources. For an excellent article see Walter S.
