One day when leaving my studio, I saw a particularly radiant sunset. The pink reflected off the side of a metal fence that is normally a light blue-gray, transforming it. My photos of the event didn't do it justice, as things seen through a camera lens rarely do.
Some months later, while thinking about how to push my work in new directions, I decided to paint a pink fence. Not one of reflected light, merely one made of pink metal. Or rather, magenta. The result is more fantastical and strange than even I imagined, and as I painted I got carried away. Putting green into the sky above and blue into the foliage below. The composition still relies on a photo reference, but has now truly veered towards the imaginative, a place I enjoy going to.
