I am an artist and a scientist who has found her voice! I truly believe in "The Synergy Of Life & Art!" [All Prices are in US$]
MessageForensic Scientist, Visual Artist & Writer, Cher-Antoinette is multi-faceted and commenced her artistic journey in 2014 where she decided to let her work speak to her life. A self-taught emerging artist from Barbados her artwork is diverse and quite different to that on the local scene.
Cher-Antoinette’s Studio was opened in August 2017 and showcases the artist's belief in “The Synergy of Life & Art!”. Her media and style of choice are Watercolour, Acrylics, Acrylic Fluid Art and Mixed Media expressions. Recently she has ventured into Modern Pointillism and Hard-Edge Abstract Art.
The love of science drew the artist to acrylic fluid art which is based in chemical and physical interactions of the paint; this resulted in the creation of FlowArtistryByCher.
Cher has gotten much attention since the launch of C-Toi Wearable Art, a jewelry line that showcases her acrylic fluid art. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and brings art to the average person in an affordable form. The pieces are also enhanced with healing crystals such as amethyst, rose quartz, hematite and carnelian.
Besides the numerous national awards for her art and writing, Cher has had two solo art exhibitions, “Just Call Me Sarah” at the UWI in 2017 and “The Colours of My Life” in 2018 at the OAS Marcus Garvey Gallery and the Barbados Embassy in Washington DC.
"The Synergy Of Life & Art!"
Statement
I am a woman, I am a forensic scientist, and I am a mother.
As an emerging artist who is self-taught, my life is one of colour, the dull and the bright and the juxtaposition they bring to my existence. I have always had an interest in art as expressed in my scientific mappings, diagrams and chemical symbols. However, as a result of a significant paradigm shift in my personal space I now challenge my emotional trauma into focused pieces that speak to the world I choose to live in.
Observation and investigation has been ingrained in me due to my professional training (Director of Forensic Sciences Centre in Barbados for over 35yrs). This has fostered an experimental approach to art. By exploring different media, substrates, and techniques I have created a diversity of work from acrylic fluid art, watercolour with pen and ink, to mixed media – acrylics with oil pastels.
Over the past seven years I have had the opportunity to be involved in several group exhibitions on my island of Barbados. I have received awards in our National Independence Festival of Creative Arts, hosted two solo exhibitions, the first under the auspices of our University of the West Indies in celebration of International Women’s Day/Month, the second at the OAS Gallery in Washington DC and also the opening of my home studio, Cher-Antoinette’s Studio.
I have always been intrigued by the stature of the female and especially that of the African Woman. My most recent works explore what I refer to as Modern Pointillism (Dot Art for some) and I create pictures that are expressions of my reverence to womanhood. I have painted images in a semi-abstract manner using the points/dots of acrylic paint on the canvas where an impression is conveyed with lines and curves juxtaposition with negative spaces. Metallic paints of gold, copper and bronze are chosen to pay homage to my African Heritage and respect for the great land that birthed us.
Some of my collections are FORM, MY AFRICAN HERITAGE and RATCHET. The pieces are mostly 12x16”. I have also created FEMSCAPES which speaks to body positivity portrayed in a semi-abstract manner on 14x14” canvas using acrylics.
Recently I have added landscapes to my MODERN POINTILLISM – Bay by the River.
It is critical to be cognizant of what goes on around me, what the Universe displays in her times of abundance as well as in her state of fury. This can be seen in my conceptual works which have birthed from the COVID-19 pandemic and Hurricane Elsa who recently ravaged our island. This collection is called WEATHERED and sizes are 14x14” to 16x20”.
My voice will continue to be heard in my paintings as I hold true to my concept of “The Synergy of Life and Art!”
