This piece is part of my “Cloud Watching Series”. It is comprised of many spiral forms linked together. Each bamboo strip, as with all pieces in the studio, started in a bamboo grove, as a cane. The bamboo is brought to my studio, heat treated, and split with three different tools to create fine strips before heat bending and sewing them together.
My cloud watching series, which I have been working on over many years, all start by creating spiral sea shell like shapes then sewing them together into flowing undulating forms. I love the shadows they cast. The inspiration or this series comes from several places. Henry Moores sculptures, which look different from every angle and have a hint of figurative reference in them is one inspiration. Another inspiration is watching the clouds. When living in New Mexico as a child I would lie down and watch the storm cloud roll in, ever changing, billowing, and beautiful. To try and guess at what the shapes might be was endless fun. As an adult, years later, I realize that the time spent being present, enjoying looking fully at what is in front of me, is time well spent.
