Hand built ceramic hummingbird sculpture in verdigris green with gold luster throat, perched on a rough stoneware block. A female Rufous, by the throat spots. The kind you see on the Eastern Slopes in July, holding a willow tip between feeding runs.

Hummingbirds spend most of their lives sitting still. The blur at the feeder is the exception, not the rule. This piece is about the other eighty percent: a small bird at rest, watching, entirely at ease in its own territory.

The bird is hand built in stoneware, finished in layered underglaze and oxide wash to a patina that reads like weathered bronze. The gorget spots are gold ink placed where the light would catch them. The base is left rough, torn from the block, so the bird sits on something closer to rock than pedestal.

Sealed with encaustic wax. Commissions welcome.
