Hand built ceramic polar bear sculpture, white stoneware with incised fish and turquoise underglaze. A bear stands on sea ice. Below the surface, the whole reason it is there: char moving in a loose school, going about their lives.

A polar bear spends most of its year on a lid. Nearly everything it eats lives on the other side, and the ice is both the barrier and the hunting ground. This piece holds that boundary flat and visible, the way it never is in life.

The bear is modelled loose and left rough. The fish panel is incised and washed so the school sits just under the surface of the clay, the way it would sit just under the surface of the water.
