Women were restricted to housekeeping and handicrafts for such a long time that we've internalized this restriction and often have a hard time believing that we are capable of great things. The beautiful girl in this work is partially hidden by attributes associated with the domestic arts. Her brain remains untapped, her brilliance and power are obscured. The frame of the portrait is stamped with the text 'No more cages, outer or inner'.
