In this piece, I was trying to recreate an earlier piece, Tide Pool Reflection. I wanted to study that process again and make sure I could repeat the effects, which I learned a lot from. The works were influenced by aerial ocean views, particularly in the shallow areas where you can see the ocean floor. The process involves layering colors into shapes and patterns scavenged from ocean images, scraping back, building back up, piling paint scrapes along the outside edges of the canvas, which I then press shapes into. In some portions, the paint is applied via palette knife, over stencils, leaving raised areas. Other times, the paint is applied thickly, and then I pressed old paint caps into it for the circles. I also bought some texture tools where paint could be shaped into peaks as I scraped through them. The pieces like these were so fun, and a balm to my soul at times when I wanted to be totally process oriented and less attached to a photo reference.
